Rotorua

Just an hours drive South West of Tauranga, you will know you have hit Rotorua - not just because of the road signs - but because of the smell of Sulphur lingering under your nose. Rotten egg smell aside ( it's not really that bad), Rotorua is unofficially deemed the adventure capital of the North Island. If the geothermal activity doesn't excite you, then I'm sure the activities on offer including white water rafting,   sledge rafting, OGO-ing and bungee jumping etc will.

Aside from the activities on offer, the town of Rotorua lays next to the beautiful Lake Rotorua, creating some beautiful scenery for walking or cycling. We recommend heading into the town on a Thursday evening, where a night market is held hosting lots of food stalls from all over the world, live music, fresh fruit and vegetables and homemade perfumes and soaps.

What to do : White Water Rafting with Kaitaki Adventures - Read our post on it here.

Mitai Maori Village -  Read our post on it here.

                    Visit the Geysers.

Where to stay : If you're camping / in a campervan, Rotorua Thermal Park is perfect. It's not too far out of town ( 5-10 minute drive, 40 minute walk) and the facilities are not out of this world, but just what you need. Cost: $36 a night for 2 people camping.
If you're after something a little more lively, the Base backpackers is centrally located and has a bar next door playing host to lots of fancy dress themed parties. Cost : $25pp for a 12 bed dorm.
